The origins of the Panchmukhi Hanuman can be found in Mythological Stories of India like the Ramayana. During the war between Lord Shree Rama and Ravana, Ravana took help of Ahiravana, the king of Pathala. God Hanuman in order to protect Lord Rama and Lakshman formed a fortress with his tail. However, Ahiravana took the form of the noble brother of Ravana and called Vibhishana and took Shri Ram and Lakshman to Pathal loka.
God Hanuman ji entered the Pataal Lok in search of both Shri Rama and Lakshman, he found that life of Ahiravana was hidden in the 5 lamps which were placed in 5 different directions. He could be killed only by extinguishing all lamps at the same time. To achieve this Shri Hanuman had to take the form of Panchamukha Hanuman. This form of Hanuman has five different faces; Narasimha, Varaha, Garuda and Hayagriva, along with Lord Hanuman’s face. Lord Hanuman using the five faces in the different directions blew air to extinguish the five lamps there by killing Ahiravana.
