Parad Lord Dhanvantari, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the father of Ayurveda, is celebrated on Dhanteras for his contributions to medicine. Emerging during the Samudra Manthan, he brought forth Ayurveda. Depicted with four arms holding a conch, chakra, medicinal herbs, and the Amrit Kalash, brass is considered sacred to him. His descendant, Divodas, founded the first school of surgery in Benares, with Sushruta, author of the Sushruta Samhita, as its principal.
